Volunteer Tutor Requirements and Commitment:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be able to speak, read, write and understand English
• Be a high school graduate or its equivalent
• Attend an 18-hour tutor training workshop
• Commit an average of two hours per week of instructional time with a student or group of students for one year
• Comply with our policy of non-discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, religion gender, sexual orientation, family status or disability.

Training:

Our tutor training workshops are held on five consecutive Saturday mornings every spring and fall. There is an orientation session held on the Wednesday evening before the actual training starts. Training is held at the Kearny Branch Library at 759 Kearny Avenue. Attendance is mandatory for all sessions. Upon completing training, tutors are certified to work with either Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language students. We ask for a $25 donation, payable at the first session, to offset the cost of the materials and resources you will receive during the training.
